Powder
Talc powder is a hydrated magnesium silicate with the chemical formula 3MgO·4SiO₂·3H₂O. Its exact composition may vary depending on the mining location, as different sources can contain varying levels of MgO, SiO₂, and water. Talc powder has a layered, plate-like structure consisting of a magnesium hydroxide layer between two silica layers. These layers are held together by weak Van der Waals forces, allowing them to slide easily under shear.
Talc powder is the softest mineral filler used in the plastics industry. It offers high electrical resistivity, low gas permeability, low abrasiveness, and excellent lubricity, all resulting from its platey structure. With an aspect ratio of up to 20:1, talc powder provides reinforcement benefits in polypropylene, high-density polyethylene, and other thermoplastics, especially when treated with coupling agents for improved polymer bonding.
